August Magazines Round-up

As usual, we've received a whole host of new magazines this August, ranging from long standing publications to magazines which have just been launched, such as The Good Journal, which beautifully highlights both the timeless and innovative nature of poetry.

The Good Journal

The Good Journal, showcasing the best works by writers and illustrators of colour, is definitely worth looking out for. The first issue is already packed with outstanding work from well-known and respected poets including Caleb Femi, the former Young People’s Laureate for London. Kamila Shamsie, Susan Wokoma, Bridget Minamore and Niven Govinden are just a few of the names promised to feature across the next couple of issues. The journal also includes works from new writers across all genres - this publication feels genuinely exciting and accessible.

Dream Catcher 37

Issue 37 of Dream Catcher features several playful poems which have revamped traditional fairy tales and brought them into the 21st century. Linda Lee Welch's fresh take sees the familar tale of Little Red Riding Hood take place at 'a rave at Granny's' and Charlotte McCormac's 'Mirror on the Wall' considers the reality of a contemporary woman within a traditional fairy story.

Poetry Wales Summer 18

Poetry Wales Summer 2018 issue explores the relationship between poetry and rituals. CAConrad, founder of (soma)tic poetry exercises, is appropriately featured here as a key poet. The three poems featured from CAConrad were all created as a result of the ‘Resurrect Extinct Vibration’ ritual in which the poet performed many tasks taking direct action against the extinction of animals across the USA. The poems suggest that a relationship between poetry and rituals can be very powerful. The stream of conscious narrative plus the unique shape and structure of each poem makes this work feel magical and transcendental.
