National Poetry Day Schools Competition: Lost Words

National Poetry Day have launched a special competition with Hamish Hamilton, publishers of The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane.

The Lost Words is a celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke. With acrostic spell-poems by award-winning writer Robert Macfarlane and hand-painted illustration by Jackie Morris, it captures the irreplaceable magic of language and nature for all ages and fascinates children.

Enter this competition to bring the magic into your classroom and inspire your pupils. There are signed copies to be won plus £100s worth of books for your school library.

Share pages from The Lost Words with your pupils. Then ask them to write their own poems on a favourite bird or animal. 

Categories: children aged 7-9 and ages 10-12.

  • 1st prize (each category): a certificate, a signed copy of The Lost Words, a giant The Lost Words bookmark, plus £100 of Penguin Random House books
  • Runners-up (each category): a certificate, a giant The Lost Words bookmark, plus £50 of Penguin Random House books
