Workshop

Poetry as Alchemy

A workshop aiming to transmute the lead of the everyday into poetic gold.

This class will examine how poetry can perform types of alchemy from the raw materials of everyday life. Participants will look at poems by Ariana Reines, Eileen Myles, Judy Grahn, Precious Okoyomon, James Schuyler, Adrienne Rich, Bhanu Kapil, Frank O’Hara, and more, and think about the ways in which the raw materials of poetry are transformed through a variety of techniques to become more than a sum of their parts. The workshop will pay particular attention to the role of form, imagery, address, and code-switching in generating a strength of feeling and a clarity of expression that exceeds the poem’s discrete components.

Alongside these discussions, participants will also write together using prompts designed to facilitate dynamic, alchemical, and magical new compositions.
