Jill Abram presents Stablemates: Conversation & poetry with Richard Georges, SJ Fowler and Geraldine Clarkson of Shearsman Books
Richard Georges was born in Trinidad and raised in the British Virgin Islands, where he is Head of Humanities at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. He won The Caribbean Writer’s Marvin E. Williams Literary Prize in 2016 and is a founding editor at Moko. Make Us All Islands was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection but Hurricane Irma prevented him travelling to London for the readings last September.
SJ Fowler is a poet, artist, and curator. He’s the poetry editor of 3am magazine, director of Writers' Centre Kingston UK and the curator of the Enemies project, which has seen over 600 writers and poets collaborating at more than 250 events, 9 exhibitions, 12 national tours and in 22 other countries. The Guide to Being Bear-Aware is doing the work poetry is meant to do, offering more questions than answers.
It’s hard to find a poetry competition prize list without Geraldine Clarkson’s name on it. She has been mentored through the Arvon/Jerwood scheme, Writers’ Centre Norwich Escalator programme and was one of the first Primers poets (Poetry School/Nine Arches Press). Her debut pamphlet, Declare, was a Poetry Book Society Choice, her next was one of the Laureate’s choices and her latest, No 25, is imminent.
