Beyond the Literal: Poetry Translation

Push beyond the ‘literal’ with Jamie McKendrick to get first-hand experience of poetry translation at this workshop.

Poetry translation has long been a contested zone, at once seen as essential and impossible. A plethora of often unhelpful terms, such as imitation, version, ‘literal’ and the paratextual ‘after’, surround the practice and the theoretical models have also proliferated within and beyond the academy, further complicating things. This Poetry School workshop will cover some of the conflicting ideas and approaches that surround poetry translation but the aim will be to offer the participants a chance to try your hand at the art of translation rather than reaching any theoretical conclusions.

Poems by Attilio Bertolucci and Eugenio Montale and a poem from a language other than Italian will also be considered. No knowledge of any language other than English is required for the purposes of this workshop.
